(Re)introducing: Quartz’s Product Team

Hello!

After a hiatus, the Quartz Product Blog is back in action to tell you about how our team works, what we’ve been working on, and what’s in our future. Since Quartz’s founding nearly ten years ago, we’ve embraced unique ways of reporting the news. From a visualization of Japan’s 72 seasons, to an interactive retrospective on internet style, to an illustrated analysis of what a climate haven could be, we strive to highlight the strengths of both our newsroom and our product team at every step. We’re so excited to tell you about that process, and hope to spread our enthusiasm for constant collaboration between product and editorial teams.

Over the past two years, we’ve rebuilt a large portion of our product team. Today, we’re a team of 17. This requires us to work efficiently, but gives us the flexibility to make creative decisions collaboratively and involve each other at every step of the process.

In the past, we’ve struggled to find a process that works for publishing this blog — one that tells the stories of the projects we’re working on without overburdening the team members working on those projects.

This year, we’ll be trying a combination of approaches. Our user research team will kick things off with a few posts on recent research-focused product launches. They’ll also interview design and engineering team members, to make sure we’re representing everyone’s point of view, and to demonstrate the strengths of internal research. We’ll publish one post a month, in anticipation of a special post in September to celebrate Quartz’s tenth birthday.
